Day 6: Sugar Makes Us Fat

June 25, 2012 By Alex Curtis, RD LDN

Welcome to Day 6 of the Summer Kick-Off Challenge!

Today’s Reason to be Sugar-Free:

The single largest source of calories for Americans comes from sugar—specifically high fructose corn syrup. Just take a look at the sugar consumption trends of the past 300 years:

-In 1700, the average person consumed about 4 pounds of sugar per year.

-In 1800, the average person consumed about 18 pounds of sugar per year.

-In 1900, individual consumption had risen to 90 pounds of sugar per year.

-In 2009, more than 50 percent of all Americans consume one-half pound of sugar PER DAY—translating to a whopping 180 pounds of sugar per year!

Today, 32 percent of Americans are obese and an additional one-third are overweight. Compare that to 1890, when a survey of white males in their fifties revealed an obesity rate of just 3.4 percent. In 1975, the obesity rate in America had reached 15 percent, and since then it has doubled.   –Dr. Johnson via Dr. Mercola

Here is Today’s Sample Menu:

Breakfast: Ultimate Vegetarian Omelette

Lunch: Plum Socca Tart with Rosemary

Snack: Chocolate Chia Pudding

Dinner: Garrick Stuffed Steak with side of roasted vegetables. Vegan Option: Dairy-Free Nachos

Dessert: Strawberry Coconut Ice Cream Sundae

Thought-provoking, mind-prodding question of the day:

It is pouring very hard here in Florida. Huge tropical storm, and I am stuck in the house! The front of my house has turned into a lake! What do you do on rainy days?

There is a massive storm here right now.. luckily made a 30 min jog with the pup this a.m.before the storm. Normally I’d clean on a rainy day but did that yesterday (on a beautiful sunny 84 degree day!).. cant predict this stuff…gotta get things done when family coming into town.
I also like to bake on rainy days…and enjoy healthy treats!
rainy days = gym, mall, grocery store..

I tried the protein cookies yesterday!!! MMMMM so good!!!! I just added some vanilla and cinnamon. Are SUPER good!!

      Trisha,

I know! And it has been raining for 2 days straight here. Ugh.

So glad you enjoyed the cookies!

Those stats are horrifying!! It is terrible how the food we purchase are filled with sugar. When I started you challenge last year, it was eye openning! I never considered the impact of sugar in the food we eat. I have changed my life to clean food and have never doubted the change since. I continue to eliminate and/or limit sugar and have seen a difference in my body and energy level.

Thanks for teaching me a better way to eat and enjoy food!

Yeah it really is amazing, and scary at the same time. Both because so many people don’t realize it and then the ones that do and continue to eat sugar (which I am guilty of, its very addictive and one little piece often turns into more which is why its actually easier to stay away from it then limit it, at least for me)

Personally I like to read or watch a movie when it rains. But its never hot here when it rains. I’ve been in weather where it was warm and rainy and it didnt make me want to cur up with a good book. Temperature totally changes the dynamic.

Oh my gosh. Has the sugar consumption really gone up THAT quickly?! That’s really sad. 🙁 At least we can make a difference and change that — starting today! 🙂
