Welcome to the Summer Kick-Off Sugar-Free Challenge Homepage!

After many requests, there will be another sugar-free challenge this June. It will start on June 20th, which is officially the first day of summer (or winter if you live in the southern hemisphere). This is a great way to feel refreshed, clean, and ready for summer to begin. It will be a ten day challenge, and I hope you join! It will be lots of fun.

Here’s the Challenge:

“Don’t eat any sugar for 10 days. This includes honey, molasses, syrups, artificial sweeteners (like Splenda), sugar alcohols (like maltitol or xylitol), and no refined sugar.”

The challenge will start on  June 20th and end on June 29th.

New this challenge! Now you can chat with other participants, ask questions, post your daily eats, and get encouragement from other challengers. I encourage all challengers to check into the forum daily to see what other challengers are eating, enjoying, or struggling with. It is a great way to interact with other challengers. Simply click on the link above that says “Forums” to access it.

The current open chat forum is a “welcome” forum. Introduce yourself and talk about why you decided to join the challenge.

The twitter hash tag for the challenge is #sfchallenge. Use this for any tweet, pin, facebook post, or instagram photo you use so that you can connect with other followers. If you have any tips, recipes, or meals you’d like to share, use this. You can follow me on twitter here.

I would love for you all to spread the word and join the challenge! During the challenge, it would be great for you to post your sugar-free eats so that you can inspire others. I will be featuring your sugar-free eats and recipes during the challenge, too. Here’s a badge you can add to your site to help promote this:

Questions? Comments? Concerns?

Email me at spoonfulofsugarfree@gmail.com. If you ever need any help, don’t hesitate to ask. I am creating this challenge so that we will have a big sugar-free support group! If you would like to send me your story on how being sugar-free helped you, I would love to publish it! Any other ideas you have? I’d love to hear!

Frequently Asked Challenge Questions:

Are you allowed to eat fruit during the challenge?

Yes, you are allowed to eat fruit. Try not to overdo it, though (as in, don’t eat 15 bananas a day!). Other than that, I believe the naturally occurring sugars found in fruit are perfectly healthy in small amounts. Fruit contains plenty of antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins to help your body.

Is stevia allowed during the challenge?

Since stevia is considered a sugar-substitute, I am not allowing it in the challenge. This makes the challenge, well, more challenging! Challenging is fun! If you think that you absolutely cannot complete the challenge without stevia, then feel free to use it.

Is alcohol allowed during the challenge?

Yes, as long as it isn’t a “mixed” alcoholic beverage like margaritas, because they have added sugar. Mixed alcoholic drinks that use only fruit juice and no added sugar are accepted. Plain wine, beer, etc. are allowed.

All participants are entered to win prizes:

NuNaturals Wellness Basket

Retail value of $100. Includes a sampling of different alcohol-free stevia, both liquid and powdered form and in different flavors. Courtesy of NuNaturals.

CORE foods Meal Bars

two winners will receive a sample pack CORE foods meal bars. Comes in Almond raisin, banana, and chocolate flavors. Contains no added sugar. Courtesy of CORE Foods.

  24. Cara says:

My husband and I have been sugar free for 6 months now so I just want to say how easy it was and how great the results, and what a healthy challenge. We do use stevia, how could I ever make homemade lemonade with fresh lemons without it. And we eat fruit. If anyone needs more motivation I dropped 20 lbs and my husband who was diabetic dropped 10 lbs and is no longer diabetic – down to pre-diabetic status now. His doctor was totally impressed. And the only change was eliminating refined sugar in everything. You have to read labels, and cook more, as so much prepared food, even peanut butter and pasta sauce often has sugar added. But the effort is so worthwhile. Good luck to those on the challenge.

    • Sugar Free Alex says:

This is fabulous! Great job to you and your husband. Congrats on the weight loss and diabetic loss (that really is amazing!). I, too, make lemonade with fresh lemons, water, and stevia, but I cut it out during this challenge, too. Thanks for the great comment!

  25. […] Oh so, today is the start of the 10 day Sugar Free Challenge created by Alex over at Spoonful of Sugar Free. […]

  26. Brian says:

I have been on a sugar free diet for a little over a month now. My doctor encouraged me to try it. I have lost 17 lbs and feel energized. I sleep a lot better too. I really believe sugar is causing the United States to be obese. Our bodies are supposed to burn fat into energy. However, with all the sugar in foods anymore, our bodies are burning sugar into energy instead. Therefore, people are getting bigger.

    • Sugar Free Alex says:

That’s great! Keep up the good work, and congrats! I agree with you, too, about the sugar in America-too much!

  27. Lilly says:

I think this can be a fun challenge but I don’t know if I can make it w/o the stevia unless I skip breakfast outright. Being wheat/gluten free, dairy free, eggs free, nut free and sugar free makes breakfast a nightmare. The only thing I’ve been able to have for breakfast is a specific kind of vegan protein shake but it has stevia.

  32. Ali says:

Will you be starting a new challenge anytime soon? If not, no worries, I’ll follow one of the older challenges.

    • Sugar Free Alex says:

      Hi Ali,

I believe I might be doing one in the summer, so stay tuned for then. If not, good luck on your own challenge and let me know if you need anything!

  33. Hi There,

I’m in the UK and have loved coming across your blog – I just saw this challenge that you ran last year, any chance you’ll be doing another one? This is just the thing I need to kick start my summer motivation!

    • Sugar Free Alex says:

      Hi Poppy,

I’m not sure yet if I will be having another challenge this summer. I have a lot of travels coming up so it might be too much for me to start. If I don’t, feel free to start your own challenge and email me if you have any questions!
