Failure, Success, and Mushy Peaches

July 11, 2012 By Alex Curtis, RD LDN

Sorry for the posting absence. I’ve still been in the kitchen, but my experiments have not been going as planned.

Exhibit A:

A paleo waffle attempt turned into a paleo waffle crumble cereal.

Exhibit B:

My quest for the perfect gluten-free banana muffin began with the first trial and error: muffins tops that sunk when taken out of the oven.

I can only learn from my mistakes, try again, and hope for success!

Exhibit C:

I bought some delicious-looking peaches to snack on, but they ended up being way to mushy and grainy. Now this isn’t so much a failure as a “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” experience.

Only in this case it was a “when life gives you mushy peaches, make Peach Crisp!” And this was a delicious experience.

With all the rainy afternoons I’ve been having lately, though, it gives me more excuses to bake and cook! Fingers crossed my next experiment is successful, though.

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” -Winston Churchill

Thought-provoking, mind-prodding question of the day:

Have you had any recent kitchen failures?

Yes! Don’t be discouraged! I tried recently to make this Paleo -Chocolate Coconut granola which is delicious made correctly and involvs walnuts, almonds, ghee, and honey. Since I am sensitive to walnuts (or maybe a little allergic), trying to not eat butter, and an over-achiever, I tried to make it with almonds, (over-processed)rolled oats (instead of walnuts), coconut butter, and date paste (which did not mix well), and put it in the oven anyway for about 2 hours before I realized this was just going to have to be coconut-chocolate chopped almonds for salads and cereal for the next 2 weeks! Oh well! It still had the great flavors 🙂

With respect to culinary experiments, you are much more brave than I am. I dabble a bit, but not nearly as much as you. But that’s how you come up with such fantastic and creative recipes! Don’t stop! 🙂

My most recent fail was trying to follow a recipe for stuffed roasted poblano peppers. However, once I roasted the peppers, there was no “stuffing” to be done. They were too soft and mushy. So, instead it turned into a casserole, with the peppers being layered with what was supposed to be stuffed inside them. Still yummy.

      Michelle,

Thanks for the sweet compliment. And your Roasted Poblano Casserole sounds delicious!

I have a wonderful sugar free recipe! I don’t give my 2 year old anything with refined sugar. She loves these and I’d like to share them with you. I’ve made these many times and they are D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S.

    Sesame and Honey Slices

    1 cup oatmeal
    1 cup sesame seeds
    1/2 cup honey
    1/2 butter

Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius. Brush loaf tin with butter. Grind oats and sesame in a food processor for about 30 secs. Heat butter and honey in a saucepan. Add this mixture into the food processor with the oats and sesame. Mix for around 30 seconds or until well combined. Spoon mixture into loaf tray and ensure it is smoothed out evenly.

Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
Cut into slices and leave to cool. Enjoy!!

I tend to have a lot of oops because I often just make something on a whim and sub ingredients based on what I have. I’ve hit upon a few awesome recipes and some epic failures but it sure is fun!
