Pluots

August 15, 2011 By Alex@Spoonful of Sugar Free

I tried a new fruit! It came in last week’s organic produce bundle.

Looks like a plum, right? Well, it is a hybrid-cross of plums and apricots! They sell many different varieties of pluots, and I believe the ones I received were the “Dapple Dandy” variety.

It has a lighter complexion than your regular plum, and is more speckled. However, once you slice into it…

The color blossoms in a deep ruby-red. Absolutely gorgeous.

The skin is not as sour as a plum, which is nice, and the flavor is more intense than plums. I enjoyed them, and I bet they would taste great in place of the plums for my Plum Socca Tart with Rosemary.

They are also rich in Vitamin A.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING, MIND-PRODDING QUESTION OF THE DAY:

Have you ever tried a pluot? If so, did you like it?

Also, do you have any favorite strange hybrid fruits? I haven’t tried many of them, and I would love to explore them more. I would love to try a grapple (grape/apple), pineberry (pineapple/strawberry), or strasberry (strawberry/raspberry).

Just today in fact I had my hand on a pluot to buy but decided on a tiny apricot instead because they were so darn cute. Should have got one of each though! It’s interesting that they can cross-breed (not sure thats the correct term) fruits… but I’ve never had any before!

I think it is so cool! I had a friend who has a friend (ha!) who cross-breads, and he was telling me a bit about how they do it. One way is graphing a limb of one tree onto a limb of the other? Pretty neat!

Wow! The color of the flesh inside is so bright! Haha I have never tried (or heard of) these before, but I can’t get over that color.
    Hope you enjoyed them!

Pluots are awesome. My family and I made jam out of them last summer, but the variety we had didn’t come off of the pit easily, so it was a bit more work. Overall, the prettiest and most vibrant plum type jams we made were out of black plums or pluots–and you couldn’t taste the difference between the two either. The red plums didn’t have the depth of color, but they tasted great too.

Color is amazing on that plutot reminds me of Grapefruits.
At the fruit shop here they call them Plumcots…they are delish!

I heard that pluots are 75% plum, 25% apricot. On the other hand, plumcots are 50% plum, 50% apricot. Pretty cool, huh?

Those look beautiful…almost too pretty to eat! I have tried grapples, and actually wasn’t impressed. I thought my toddler would love them, but she didn’t really go for them either.

I love them and if they were in season all year, I’d be in heaven.

But I take the 3 or so (short!) weeks I can get with the lovely pluots!
