This challenge is officially over.

Here’s the challenge:

Don’t eat any sugar for 10 days. This includes honey, molasses, syrups, artificial sweeteners (like Splenda), sugar alcohols (like maltitol or xylitol), and no refined sugar.

The challenge will start on June 1st, so this will give you plenty of time to prepare yourself! I will be posting my daily sugar-free eats for the challenge, and tips on going sugar-free.

Bloggers: I would love for you all to spread the word and join the challenge! During the challenge, it would be great for you to post your sugar-free eats so that you can inspire others. I will be featuring your sugar-free eats and recipes during the challenge, too.

Here is a badge (courtesy of RunToTheFinish) to attach to your blog if you like:

Here is the HTML for the badge:

So glad you are doing this! I have talked about eating sugar-free on my blog, I think this is a GREAT challenge for everyone who has been too scared, to try eating sugar-free! I know they will see a HUGE difference in just 10 days!

I can’t wait to see your daily eats during the challenge!

  3. Damjana says:

I’m almost sugar free (I use honey and hazelnut syrup) but I’m willing to give this challenge a kick!
    love Damjana

  4. Margarita says:

    Hi Alex,

This is a very great idea about the challenge. I think I emailed you before and mentioned a bit about me going sugar-free and being pretty much sugar free for the last 6 months (but I don’t like counting! ;))… however, I too still use stevia in my life (and raw honey on rare occasion). Stevia is a sweetener as well and I would like to be completely 100% sugar-free. I will be joining your challenge on June 1st. YEY! 😀

  5. Brooke says:

Wow, I am so glad I found your website. I’m currently doing a detox called “the Clean and lean” diet and it has really opened my eyes on just how harmful sugar is. So I’m proud to say I’ve been sugar free for 5 days now and have seen a huge improvement on my tummy. Anywho, I just made your oatcakes this morning, love them! Keep those recipes coming!

  6. Tory says:

Kicking the sugar habit together. What a wonderful idea!! A suport group to be there when we kick the sugar habit. For me I think for the first time in my life I will truly understand what people go through when they try to give up smoking when they have smoked all their life…this is certainly NOT going to be easy for me!!!! Sugar has a hold on me and I know that’s not good. So thank you for wanting to be there as I kick the habit. After 10 days, lets try for 30 etc… Love your web site.

  7. Diana says:

I really need to do this challenge. Sugar is the one thing that I can’t seem to get rid of, and I know I would benefit so much from being sugar-free. My dad is a recovering alcoholic (15 years now) and I’ve read that there can be a genetic predisposition to this. Well, I don’t drink, but I think sugar is my vice. Once I start, it’s hard to stop. Even simple carbs can do this to me. I need to kick this habit in the butt!!

  8. This sounds like fun!!! 🙂 I am totally in! 🙂

  9. Val says:

This sounds like such a great idea. I’ve always wanted to try this, but its so hard when you are the only one. I feel like this will be great motivation to actually finally do this!

  10. Shannon says:

I defiantly want to try this, count me in!

  11. Jessica says:

Sign me up! This sounds like a fantastic jump start to curb those summer sugar traps!

  12. I would love to do this! Quick question though, is stevia off limits as well? Don’t think it will change my mind, just want to fully know what I’m getting into 🙂

  13. Karine says:

Excellent idea! Hopefully this challenge will help and motivate many of us. 🙂
So, I’d like to enter it! I’m looking forward to it!

  14. Karine says:

Oh, and I have a question : what about flours and refined grains (pasta, bread, …) ? Should we include them in the challenge, event if they don’t taste sweet? I’ve heard somewhere that even whole wheat bread “acts” like refined foods…

  15. Jen says:

I was sugar free for 4 years, then started nibbling here and there. Now I feel how strong a sugar addiction can be. I’m in!

  20. Mowenackie says:

This is a great idea – thanks for sponsoring it!

I’m 99% sugar and sweetener free (I use agave in desserts still), but I’d love to eliminate that or even just kick my tastebuds into “downsizing” the amount I use. This will be the perfect opportunity to do just that.

And I *think* I even have my husband talked into trying it with me. But I can’t guarentee that one, especially as long as we have chocolate chips in the house. (:

  23. I guess I am in. I should be moved and settled by June 1. I feel sorry for the people that will be around me 🙂

  24. I really really want to do this challenge. I’m going to be going on a retreat starting June 9th so, while I’ll try my best to avoid sugar, I may not be able to 100% avoid added sugars. Maybe I could start a couple days early and end a couple days early?
I think that doing a sugar free challenge is such a great idea!

    Great idea.

  27. Angelique S says:

Wow, this is a great challenge! I’m sure I consume more sugar than I’m aware – and sweets are my weakness. I’d like to make change!! 10 days – we CAN do it! Glad I found your site!

  28. down for the challenge!

  29. Jessica says:

In January I went sugar free and artificial sweetener free. I used stevia. Since Easter I got a taste and once again craving some sugary goodness. Looking forward to the challenge. Love your blog!

  30. Becky says:

I’m in! It’s sort of perfect timing for me, as we are handing in our Bachelor’s project on Monday, and I need to get healthier to make up for the past weeks very poor food choices.

I’m thinking I might do both sugar and gluten free, or would that be too much at once?

  31. Wow this look like SUCH A cool challenge!!! I think I’ll give it a try!!

  32. I’m in! I already eat and sometimes blog sugar-free (I call it sweetener-free). I used to be a professional baker and have always had a killer sweet tooth….but these days it aint nothing a good banana or mango can’t satisfy 🙂

Hi! I was wondering if you could do a post and before the sugar free challenge starts of common things that people think doesn’t contain sugar, but really does and maybe a few tips and stuff. I’ve been making sure not to buy anything with sugar in it lately (although still eating a bit of whats in the house…oops) but I can’t seem to find any bread at the grocery store that doesn’t contain some form of sugar. Thanks!

  35. Emily says:

The timing of this is perfect. I’m glad I found your blog and the sugar free challenge.

  36. Cate says:

I will most definitely join! I used to eat sugar-free and felt fantastic. Getting back on the bandwagon has been really hard, so I’m glad I’ll be joining a group effort—maybe it’ll be the extra kick in the pants I need!

  39. Ruthie says:

I’m in! Looking forward to this! I’m basically sugar free already due to the fact cane sugar drains me of energy. I do use coconut palm sugar & agave syrup but am learning the evils of agave syrup. I tried your chocolate cupcake recipe – which even my kids loved! So glad I found your website – you are an absolute gem!

  40. Tracey says:

Thanks for posting a challenge like this! AA few weeks ago I tried to cut out sugar completely to help some of the yeast in my digestive system die off. It was a miserable week for me and I ended up just reducing my sugar and have continued that until now… I wish I knew about your blog when I was trying to go sugar free. I bet it would have made a big difference! 🙂

I AM IN! Sugar-free and happy to have the support of this group. My body reacts very strongly to all refined sugars (racing heart, anxious, irritable and then a crash of energy) and I have been avoiding them for the most part for about a year. But I love my raw desserts made with agave, maple syrup or honey, etc and can overindulge. I still crave something sweet at the end of meals and would love to feel content after instead. I have also been gluten free for the past year and have noticed dramatic improvements in my digestion. I appreciate this opportunity and look forward to sharing with you all.

So glad that Deanna (The Mommy Bowl) mentioned this on her blog! Not sure I’ll have any posts to share during this time, but we’ll see. 🙂

    Thanks for hosting!

  78. Kara says:

What do you do for a special occasion? Example i have a wedding this Saturday?

    • Hey Kara!

I usually just stick to what I know is sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten-free (since I don’t eat all three). I know breaded-things, and cream-based things are out. Anything with fruit “sauces” usually always have sugar. I stick with meat, vegetables, whole fruit, and whole grains. I also skip dessert. I always have a back-up plan, too. Like a bag of nuts and an apple in my purse. Hope this helps!

(BTW I’m not implying that I either agree or disagree with Jenny, I’m just curious what your thoughts are on it. 🙂

    • Hey Sadie!

I completely agree that we should allow ourselves treats or else we just start craving them like crazy and feel horrible. Depriving is not a way to live. However, I, personally, cannot eat the sugar or l else I get sick. That is why I created this website. To show people that treats do not have to be sugar-laden and unhealthy. All of my treats are made from whole foods. Our ancestors didn’t rely on processed junk. They did not have to have desserts everyday because they couldn’t. Our society today is so privileged to have everything at our fingertips. I remember my Grandma telling me that she would have one treat every Sunday: her father would buy a honeycomb and split it with the family. One piece of a honeycomb: a wholesome food. Whatever works for each person, though. We are all different.
